Fire Destroys Building at Historic Market

April 02, 2002|From Times Staff Reports

A fire over the weekend destroyed the metal warehouse of a historic downtown market and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the building, Oxnard fire officials said.

The fire at Santa Cruz Market, in the 700 block of South A Street, began about 1:45 a.m. Sunday and was knocked down about two hours later, said Battalion Chief Clarence Slayton.

The brick building was built in 1918, and the metal warehouse was added to the rear of the building.
