Crisping the Sfogliatelle

April 10, 2002|Barbara Hansen

If you like crisp, flaky pastries, you'll love sfogliatelle. At Italia Bakery & Deli in Granada Hills, the clam-shaped Neapolitan pastries are formed of strips of filo dough rather than traditional puff pastry, filled with lightly sweetened ricotta cheese and sprinkled with powdered sugar. You can buy sfogliatelle in two sizes at the bakery. While there, check the takeout menu, which is loaded with Italian specialties such as eggplant parmigiana, lasagna and spaghetti as well as fresh pasta, pizza dough and sandwiches.

Sfogliatelle, 99 cents for small, $1.69 for large, at Italia Bakery & Deli, 11134 Balboa Blvd., Granada Hills. (818) 360-2913.
