The executive director of the state's Republican Party was indicted on charges of illegally intercepting telephone conference calls involving Gov. Mark Warner and other Democrats.
Edmund A. Matricardi III, 33, was charged in Richmond with two counts of illegal wire interception and two counts of attempting to use the contents. He was released without bail.
Matricardi resigned Tuesday from his GOP post, state Republican Chairman Gary Thomson said.
The phone calls involved a discussion about a court fight over redistricting.
