Congo and Rebels to Form New Army

April 12, 2002|Associated Press

KIGALI, Rwanda — After nearly four years of civil war, Congolese rebels and the government have agreed to integrate into a new national army--breaking a major deadlock in ongoing peace talks in South Africa, a rebel official said Thursday.

The Congolese government still must determine the size of the new national army and the makeup of its command structure and troops, said Moise Nyarugabo, an official with the rebel Congolese Rally for Democracy.
