Early Learning Center Moved Over Funding

April 20, 2002

Re "County Shelves Plan for Early Learning Center at the Mall," April 11: The L.A. County Office of Education changed plans about where to place an innovative preschool learning center because of a change in funding. The original request was for a $2.1-million appropriation. What was finally received, while still generous, was only $440,000. This crucial funding difference--nearly $1.7 million--was not mentioned in the story.

In December 2001, after getting the news, the LACOE began reviewing other options for the project. This revised planning was based on the new fiscal reality. We are grateful for funding to help ensure that young children are ready to learn when they begin school. We take pride in being fiscally and educationally responsible. And we view our new plans for a partnership with the county's Women, Infants and Children nutrition centers as an effective and cost-efficient way to aid communities in need.
