Hawaii Ends Program to Catch Speeders

April 21, 2002|Jane Engle; Times staff and wirefxs; Associated Press

HONOLULU--Hawaii Gov. Ben Cayetano has ordered the shutdown of a traffic-camera program to catch speeders. The program, begun in January on Oahu roadways used heavily by tourists and locals alike, was to move to other islands this summer. But it faced harsh criticism from residents and legal challenges as attorneys found loopholes.

The governor said he took the action because the Legislature planned to repeal the three-year pilot program. But he added, "Driving at faster speeds has become a habit for many drivers and explains, at least in part, why there was so much opposition to the traffic van cam."
