Building Values

April 28, 2002

Re "Faith in the City and in the Future," April 25: Ira Yellin has already succeeded in building what matters most--a lasting legacy through the values that he exemplifies. His civic passion was unmistakably clear in the only meeting I have ever had with him, a one-hour, one-on-one talk more than several years ago.

Physical structures are temporary, but fundamental human values are forever. In his quest to create a wonderful heart of the city, Yellin's humanity represented the wonderful heart that more Angelenos need to strengthen the city's core. As a positive source of meaning for many, his value structure will endure.
