American troops on patrol in southeastern Afghanistan exchanged fire with allied Afghan soldiers at a checkpoint, but no casualties were reported, a senior Afghan commander said.

A U.S. Army spokesman at Bagram air base near Kabul said he was not aware of the incident.

The 10-minute firefight began Tuesday when Afghan soldiers near Zormat district asked the Americans for a password they didn't have, commander Abul Matin Husainkhil said in Gardez.

It was not clear which side fired first.

Husainkhil played down the incident, calling it "a misunderstanding."
