Two police officers were injured in separate incidents Tuesday after their vehicles were struck by cars whose drivers apparently did not hear sirens, officials said.

"It was a bad night for police cars," said Sgt. Henry Boggs, a spokesman for the Irvine Police Department.

Irvine Police Officer Alex Mendoza was hospitalized with moderate injuries after being hit about 6 p.m. at Jamboree Road and Walnut Avenue by a sports-utility vehicle that entered the intersection despite the officer's lights and siren. The second incident was about 9:30 p.m. on Euclid Street near the Santa Ana Freeway in Anaheim. A police car answering an emergency call overturned after being broadsided by another vehicle.

"He's fine," Sgt. Randall Brydges, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department, said of the officer, whose name was not released.

No occupants of the other cars were injured, police said.
