It was a year eclipsed by the events of a single day, a day when America faltered but did not fall.

Terrorist attacks on American landmarks, death tolls in the thousands, our security shattered.

Cartoonists' images of Sept. 11, 2001, and its aftermath helped give expression to that which we all felt. These four works were among our most evocative.

Michael Ramirez, editorial cartoonist for The Times, joined the paper in 1997. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994.

Paul Conrad, winner of three Pulitzers, was The Times' chief cartoonist from 1964 to 1993.
