14 Killed as Rebels Wage Scattered Attacks

Attacks by Colombian guerrillas over the New Year's holiday left 14 people dead, officials said.

Rebels attacked the western towns of Purace and Coconuco on Monday, killing two police officers. Eight soldiers who pursued the rebels stumbled on a mine field and were killed.

In the southern town of Berruecos, three police officers died in an attack on their post. Tuesday, a guerrilla died in a raid on a military base in Arauca state.

Delegates from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the main rebel army, and the government are to meet Thursday to get cease-fire talks underway.
