Prison Term Is Tripled for False Sept. 11 Tip

January 04, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

A judge has sentenced a Brooklyn man to 21 months in prison--triple the expected term--for giving the FBI a false tip linking his fiancee's boss of Arab descent to the World Trade Center attack.

U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon said in handing down the sentence in Brooklyn that she increased the jail time from the sentencing guidelines of up to six months to serve as a deterrent.

Jack Barresi, 38, pleaded guilty in November to lying to a federal officer. Before he was sentenced, Barresi apologized in court and said he was "ashamed and embarrassed" for what he had done.
