A Better Deal Than Hotels on Park Place

January 04, 2002

A customer at a bar in southern France paid with Monopoly money, taking advantage of confusion in Europe's currency switch to get a free drink, the bar's owner said.

The classic board game now comes in a euro edition.

Jean-Paul Boutan, owner of the bar in Auch, said the bartender was not used to the new euro notes and mistook the 5-euro Monopoly note for real currency.

"It was the first day of the new year," Boutan said. "We were tired after being open so late the night before."
