Judge Denies Request to Delay Traficant Trial

January 04, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

A federal judge in Cleveland denied a request to delay the corruption trial of Rep. James A. Traficant Jr.

Instead, the judge split the trials of Traficant and co-defendant Richard Detore and delayed Detore's trial to allow his new lawyers time to prepare their defense.

Traficant, an Ohio Democrat, was indicted on bribery and conspiracy charges for allegedly accepting gifts and favors in exchange for using his influence on behalf of local businessmen.

Traficant is not a lawyer but will represent himself at his trial beginning Feb. 4.
