Sen. Breaux Says He Won't Run for Governor

January 04, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Sen. John B. Breaux said he will not run for governor of Louisiana, ending months of speculation and leaving the race to succeed Gov. Mike Foster wide open.

Breaux, a moderate Democrat, had said for months that he was considering a run next year to succeed Foster, a popular Republican barred from seeking a third consecutive term.

"After weighing all the advice and counsel, I think that I can be most effective in helping Louisiana grow and prosper by continuing to serve in the U.S. Senate," Breaux said. "Louisiana has a 30-year investment in me that cannot be discounted."
