Demus Earns Two Top Track Rankings

Hurdler Lashinda Demus, a June graduate of Long Beach Wilson High, earned a No. 1 national ranking by Track & Field News magazine for the 2001 season.

Demus was ranked first in the nation in the 300-meter low hurdles after setting two national records in that event and was also ranked third in the 100 high hurdles. In addition, she ran legs on Wilson teams that ranked first in the 400, 1,600 and sprint medley relays.

Other girls who earned No. 1 individual rankings include Angel Perkins of Cerritos Gahr in the 200, Chaunte Howard of Riverside North in the high jump, Shayla Balentine of Morro Bay in the pole vault and Karen Freberg of San Luis Obispo in the shotput.

Jamil Smith of Washington State, a June graduate of Palmdale, was the highest-ranking boy from the region with a No. 2 rating in the triple jump.
