Manzanar Remembered

January 11, 2002

"Concentration camp" is the correct designation for Manzanar ("Manzanar Building to Be Visitor Center," Jan. 7). As a young boy I met many former detainees of my own age and never believed it was anything but a concentration camp.

My wife and I visited the site in 1999, and I saw nothing there that would have changed my opinion. The Museum of Eastern California in Independence holds a large number of artifacts. Viewing these relics was very instructive. We were also fortunate to see the Ansel Adams photographic exhibit on the camp. The thing that hit home the most was the faces of the children.

I hope many will have the opportunity to visit the reconstructed site and learn how civil liberties are sometimes sacrificed in the name of patriotism. This is an event we all need to remember.
