Prosecutors Protest Against Government

January 13, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Italian prosecutors staged a nationwide protest against the government, accusing it of trying to curb their independence and meddling in trials to protect conservative Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his allies.

Prosecutors in courtrooms across Italy marked the opening of the judicial year by donning black robes rather than their formal, ermine-lapeled red capes to show their "great concern for the state of justice," the National Assn. of Magistrates said.

The protest was the latest episode in the stormy relationship between the judiciary and Berlusconi.
