Sudan, Rebels Embark on Week of Peace Talks

January 15, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

The Sudanese government and southern rebels launched peace talks mediated by U.S. and Swiss officials and aimed at agreement on a cease-fire, officials said.

Switzerland is helping Washington try to end Sudan's 18-year civil war, one of the longest in Africa. More than 2 million people are estimated to have died in the fighting and related famines.

About 10 security experts and others from each side are participating in the weeklong talks at the Buergenstock resort, a Swiss Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
