January 20, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

FBI Director Robert Mueller arrived in Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials expected to focus on security issues, official sources said.

Egyptian sources said Mueller would discuss "means of strengthening ties between Egypt and the United States, particularly in the fields of security and surveillance."

"The FBI director is on a regional tour and is here to get to know his Egyptian counterparts. . . . Some of the investigations into Sept. 11 involve Egyptians," a U.S. Embassy official said. Mueller's trip also will include Saudi Arabia, he said.
