Appeal Opens for Lockerbie Bomber

January 24, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Lawyers opened an appeal for the man convicted of bombing Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, by accusing judges of misunderstanding and misinterpreting evidence when they found the Libyan guilty in the 1988 airliner blast.

Abdel Basset Ali Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison last January for killing 270 people with a suitcase bomb that blew up the plane.

"There exists significant evidence which was not heard at the trial," lawyers said in their written appeal. The appeal is being held at a former U.S. air base in the Netherlands.
