Processing of Asylum Requests to Resume

January 25, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Australia said it would resume processing the asylum applications of Afghan refugees at an outback detention center.

About 200 mostly Afghan detainees at the Woomera center have been on a hunger strike for more than a week to protest the delay.

But Australian Prime Minister John Howard reiterated today that the detention policy would continue.

"There is no alternative if we are to keep control of the flow of people into this country," he said.
