Astronauts Place Shields Outside Space Station

January 26, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Two residents of the international space station ventured outside and installed plume deflectors on steering thrusters to prevent rocket fuel from contaminating equipment and spacewalkers.

American Daniel Bursch and Russian Yuri Onufrienko attached the ringed aluminum shields to all six sets of thrusters mounted at the back of the Russian-built living quarters.

It was the second spacewalk in as many weeks at the complex 250 miles above Earth.
