Bill Simon's Stealth Campaign

July 18, 2002

Re "Simon's Success Story Is a Secret," July 13: I don't vote for stealth candidates. Either Bill Simon does what Gov. Gray Davis and President Bush did--open up his tax returns to scrutiny by the electorate--or I, who have a suspicious mind, will think Simon has something to hide.

Simon's refusal to explain how he has become a "successful businessman" proves the adage that the reason politicians stand on their platforms is that they don't want anyone to see them.

So Simon refuses to release his tax returns, can't prove he's a "successful businessman" and is under investigation for abusing a tax shelter. Can we just end this campaign now and declare Davis the next governor by acclamation?
