Terminal Evacuated Over Belt Buckle

July 22, 2002|From Times Staff Reports

Los Angeles International Airport's Terminal Three was partly evacuated Sunday after an X-ray machine detected a suspicious object that turned out to be a belt buckle, airport police said.

The item was noticed about 4:30 p.m. by security workers on the terminal's upper departure level, Airport Police Sgt. Mike Edwards said. The Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad was called, Edwards said. Passengers who had already been screened were moved to the north area of the terminal; others waited outside. During the evacuation, police diverted traffic on the upper level, but vehicles were allowed to use the lower level.

Six departing flights were delayed, according to airport officials.
