July 27, 2002|From Times Staff Reports

A 21-year-old rap music fan who prosecutors said was influenced by the violent nature of the lyrics was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for fatally shooting two friends.

Bernie Daniel Gutierrez was convicted June 26 of two counts of murder for the March killings of Michael Peckham, 20, and Francisco Javier Anguiano, 24.

Co-defendant Jose Alfredo Navarro, 21, was sentenced earlier to four years in prison for burglary and being an accessory after the fact.

Attorney Gil Carreon, who represented Gutierrez, contended his client was innocent.
