In Diplomatic Response, Britons May Be Barred

July 28, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

The Zimbabwean government threatened to compile a list of British citizens barred from entry in retaliation for the deportation of a senior ruling party official from England, a newspaper reported.

British officials said Joshua Malinga, a politburo member and deputy secretary for disability, was violating European Union sanctions that banned top Zimbabwean officials from entry to the union's 15 member states.

The ban aims to punish Zimbabwe for human rights abuses and its economic policies.

"Perhaps the time has come for our own list of Brits who are not welcome in Zimbabwe," Information Minister Jonathan Moyo told the state-run daily, the Herald.
