TV Station Returns, Has Kremlin-Linked Partner

THE WORLD | IN BRIEF/ RUSSIA

June 02, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

An independent Russian TV station whose closure in January triggered concerns about media freedoms in Russia went back on the air, but under the eye of a politician with strong Kremlin links.

TVS, formerly TV6, returned with roughly the same team of liberal journalists. But authorities returned control only after staffers had teamed up with business heavyweights and politicians, including political veteran Yevgeny M. Primakov, a former prime minister with close Kremlin connections. Primakov has said he will not interfere with coverage.
