Radiation Pills Given to Nuclear Plant Neighbors

June 09, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

Neighbors of a nuclear power plant 30 miles north of New York City stood in line for free radiation-fighting pills to keep in their homes in case of an emergency.

The Nuclear Regulator Commission is offering the potassium iodide pills to residents within 10 miles of nuclear plants. They already have been distributed in Vermont and Maryland.

Potassium iodide combats thyroid cancer, a common result of radiation exposure.
