June 10, 2002

A Riverside woman who was seriously injured in the April 23 Placentia train crash died over the weekend, becoming the third fatality from the accident, authorities said Sunday.

Hazel M. Huffman, 77, died Friday at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Riverside of injuries believed to have been caused by the collision.

"We are still waiting for medical records from the hospital" before making a final determination, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's office said Sunday, "but as far as I know, hers is the third death."

Two other Riverside County residents--Bob Kobe, 59, of Moreno Valley and Larry Sorensen, 48, of Pedley--were killed when a mile-long Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train struck a Metrolink train near Orangethorpe Avenue and Richfield Road.

More than 160 people were injured in the crash.
