Mayor Urges More City Funding for Arts

June 14, 2002|From Times Staff Reports

Mayor Ray Di Guilio said this week he wants the city to give more money to the arts.

At the City Council's second budget study session Monday night, the mayor suggested the council add $100,000 from its own contingency fund to provide grants for the arts community.

Ventura's proposed 2002-2003 budget also includes $580,000 of unallocated funds the council can use to carry out 15 priority projects, including establishing a cultural arts center, stimulating downtown housing and enhancing tourism. The council could have another $420,000, increasing its discretionary pot to $1 million, if it hikes various city fees.

A public hearing on the budget will be held during the council's next meeting on Monday at 7 p.m.
