House Arrest Is Best for Ill, Elderly Inmates

June 16, 2002

Re "The Graying of the Prisons," June 9:

I fail to see the reason for imprisoning a 75-year-old man who has several life-threatening conditions. A woman so sick as to need kidney dialysis three times a week is not hatching a scheme. She is concerned with her health and seeing her loved ones again.

Prisoners who are so old and physically ill that they are burdening the penal system should be put on house arrest with a child, relative or friend to aid them.

There is no good reason to keep these men and women in prison. It is time that we reevaluate the parole system; too many people who deserve parole are not granted it.
