Davis' Mismanagement

June 18, 2002

I don't see how Gov. Gray Davis' focus on Bill Simon Jr.'s purported mismanagement more than 10 years ago is going to help the governor in his reelection bid, which appears to be his to lose.

Your June 13 article on Simon's involvement in the failing savings and loan he inherited reported that his mismanagement cost U.S. taxpayers $122 million. If Davis' mismanagement of the utility crisis he inherited had cost California taxpayers only $122 million, the state would be in much better fiscal shape than it is today.

The governor may want to focus the electorate on issues other than those that reflect so poorly on him.
