UC Irvine Fills Athletic Post

June 25, 2002|Eric Stephens

Petrina Long will serve as interim athletic director at UC Irvine, the school announced Monday. Long, Irvine's senior associate athletic director, has not applied for the permanent job, which will be vacated July 1 when Dan Guerrero leaves to become athletic director at UCLA.

Chancellor Ralph Cicerone has organized an 11-member search committee of faculty, staff, students and community leaders that will compile a list of candidates and ultimately recommend a hire.

Athletic directors Ron Prettyman of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Greg Warzecka of UC Davis are considered prime candidates. Prettyman took over at Dominguez Hills when Guerrero left for Irvine 9 1/2 years ago. Warzecka oversees a program that recently won the Sears Directors' Cup as the best in the nation in Division II.
