DATELINE WORLD CUP 2002/JAPAN

Stadium Food GetsLukewarm Reviews

June 26, 2002|From Wire Reports

Tim Youldon had only one word for the food at the Sapporo World Cup stadium. "Rank," said the 27-year-old computer technician from Swindon, England.

It got a similar review from his friend, Stephen Hales, a 29-year-old retail manager: "They served cold hamburgers, that says it all."

Japanese officials had decided that it was unsafe to let caterers bring in cooking equipment.

Some fans found at least one positive.

"They are only supposed to sell one beer to each person but you could just go up and say '10 beers please' and they'd say, 'Sure, fine,' " said Shaun Starkey, 27, of London. "I think that's great."
