Superior Court Judge John E. Dobroth has been named Judge of the Year by the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Assn.
The award recognizes patience, intellect, understanding and compassion toward litigants and attorneys in the courtroom. Honorees are chosen by a committee of local attorneys, prosecutors and public defenders.
Dobroth, 60, a former prosecutor, was elected to the bench in 1986 and now presides over juvenile delinquency matters.
He was instrumental in starting a court program in which transients can resolve minor offenses or outstanding fees through community service.
For the past eight years, Dobroth has volunteered at Ventura's annual Stand Down, during which homeless veterans can work off outstanding warrants, unpaid traffic tickets and other minor violations.
