Girl, 4, Critical After Collision
A 4-year-old was critically injured Sunday when a Mitsubishi ran a red light in Costa Mesa and smashed into the Chevrolet Suburban in which she was riding, police said.
The Mitsubishi was eastbound on Wilson Street about 6:15 p.m. when it ran the light and smashed into the Suburban, which was heading south on Newport Boulevard, pushing it into a telephone pole, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Scott May said.
The girl was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
June Gutierrez, 27, driver of the Chevrolet, and her brother, Joe, 16, a passenger in the car, were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. They both live in Costa Mesa.
May did not have the girl’s name.
The driver of the Mitsubishi, Mike Lienert, 42, of Reno, Nev., was not injured.
No citations had been issued by late Sunday. The accident remains under investigation.
