Britain recalled many of its diplomats from Pakistan and advised other British nationals to leave the country after receiving threats.

"The nature of the threats was a bomb attack," said a spokeswoman at the British Embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

Ambassador Hilary Synnott will remain in the country, but the number of diplomats and staff and family members attached to the embassy will be cut from about 210 to 80. There will be similar cuts at consulates in Karachi and Lahore.
