Long Beach Heritage has been awarded a $72,000 Getty Planning Grant from the J. Paul Getty Trust to preserve and restore the historic Bembridge House.
Built in 1906, the Bembridge House is a designated Long Beach Historic Landmark and is considered the most ornate Victorian residence in that city. The estate boasts extensive carved woodwork, stained and leaded glass and a tiled fireplace.
The grant money will go toward the development of a master plan to conserve the historic house, carriage house and aviary. Funds also will restore landscaping, improve access for the disabled and pay for seismic strengthening.
The Bembridge House will be featured on the Great Homes of Long Beach tour June 9, from noon to 5 p.m. The tour, sponsored by the Long Beach Heritage, will include four other historic homes.
Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers, and are available from the Heritage. The tour is self-guided, with docents available at each home.
Checks and a self-addressed, stamped envelope should be sent to Long Beach Heritage, P.O. Box 92521, Long Beach, CA 90809.
