It was 1963, and I was on my way to France to teach at a school on a U.S. Army base in La Rochelle. One lovely fall evening I took my time driving along the picturesque harbor, through the clock tower arch and on to a club. During the evening the music and the merriment stopped when we were told that President John F. Kennedy had been shot.
