L.A. Priest to Head Iowa Episcopal Diocese

An Oxford University-trained priest from Los Angeles has been elected bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa.

The Rev. Alan Scarfe, 52, rector of St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, won the support of clergy and lay delegates in a Nov. 1 vote to become the new spiritual leader for more than 12,000 Episcopalians in 64 Iowa congregations.

"It's very exciting, and I'm very humbled by it," Scarfe said.

Scarfe, born in Thornton, England, will be the ninth bishop since the diocese was founded in 1853. He will be ordained in on April 5. He has a master's degree in theology from Oxford University.
