Searching for Terrorists

November 20, 2002

Re "Australia Hunts for Terror Cells," Nov. 17: So, Australian intelligence officers have raided the homes of Indonesian immigrants in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. They sometimes (gasp!) break down the doors in their search for evidence of terrorists. Australian Islamic leaders contend that the police tactics were an overreaction by a conservative government hostile to Muslim immigrants. This following the deaths of Australian tourists in the Bali blast of Oct. 12.

"There was no reason to come with weapons and make everyone scared," whined one of the suspects, a recently naturalized Australian citizen with terrorist connections. Way to go, Aussies! Kick down more of those doors. Good on ya', mate!
