Boeing to Cut 5,000 More Aviation Jobs

IN BRIEF / AEROSPACE

November 21, 2002|From Bloomberg News/ Associated Press

Boeing Co. said it will eliminate 5,000 more jobs next year in addition to the nearly 30,000 cuts the aerospace company has made since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Half would be made through attrition and the rest through layoffs in the commercial-airplane division, mainly in Washington state, the company said, citing continued slow sales to ailing airlines.

The cuts represent about 8% of the 65,000 employees at Boeing's commercial-airplane business, which makes the 777 and 737 model jetliners.

Shares of Boeing rose 33 cents to $31.73 on the New York Stock Exchange before the announcement.
