Man Gets 11 Years in Theft of Credit Cards

October 02, 2002|From Staff and Wire Reports

A man was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison Monday for stealing thousands of pieces of mail from collection boxes and tapping into telephone lines to activate stolen credit cards.

Craig Alden St. Clair, 42, had pleaded guilty earlier to possession of counterfeit postal keys and illicit possession of credit cards.

Authorities said St. Clair affixed Postal Service signs to his truck as he drove around Lake Elsinore, Corona and Moreno Valley and stole mail. Posing as a repairman, officials said, he tapped into phone lines to activate credit cards from victims' home numbers.
