Lawyer's Terror Trial Date Set

October 04, 2002|Reuters

NEW YORK — A federal judge Thursday set an Oct. 7, 2003, trial date in the widely watched case of a New York defense lawyer charged with helping a militant Islamic cleric direct terrorists from his prison cell.

U.S. District Judge John Koeltl said he was allowing the lengthy trial preparation period because of the complexity of the case against defense lawyer Lynne F. Stewart, who was indicted in April. He also cited the massive amount of government evidence to be reviewed by defense lawyers.
