Inland Empire Challenge

When: Saturday

Where: Guasti Regional Park, Ontario

What: Erick Maldonado of Chino Don Lugo, the defending state Division I champion, and Kellen Acosta of Murrieta Valley are expected to battle for the individual title in the boys' sweepstakes race. The girls' event will feature Hesperia Sultana and Murrieta Valley, ranked Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, by The Times.

Boys' Water Polo

S & R Sport Cup

When: Today and Saturday

Where: Newport Harbor High and Belmont Plaza, Long Beach

What: The 16-team tournament, formerly known as the Southern California Invitational, pits top teams from Northern California against top teams from Southern California. Long Beach Wilson, ranked No. 1 by The Times, is seeded first, followed by North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Anaheim Servite and Corona del Mar. Northern California teams include Carmichael Jesuit and San Jose Bellarmine. The championship game is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. Saturday at Belmont Plaza.

Girls' Volleyball

Santa Ana Mater Dei at L.A. Marymount

When: Today, 6 p.m.

What: The small-school powerhouse and defending Division IV state champion, ranked No. 2 by The Times, hosts large-school power and No. 7 Mater Dei in a nonleague match. Mater Dei will be looking to avenge a loss in the Dave Mohs tournament championship match, won, 15-13, 16-14, by Marymount.
