Play By Play

October 12, 2002|Bob Cuomo

FIRST INNING

TWINS: Twins 0, Angels 0--Jacque Jones lined Jarrod Washburn's second pitch to right. He's hitless in 10 at-bats in the series. Cristian Guzman hit a hard shot into the hole at short. David Eckstein made a nice backhand stop, but his throw bounced past Scott Spiezio for an error. Corey Koskie struck out looking. Matthew LeCroy blooped a single to left-center, Guzman taking third. Torii Hunter flied to left. No runs, one hit, one error, two left.

ANGELS: Twins 0, Angels 0--Eckstein flied left. Darin Erstad struck out swinging. Tim Salmon lined a shot to deep right-center, but Hunter took at least a double away with a leaping catch. No runs, no hits.

SECOND INNING

TWINS: Twins 0, Angels 0--Doug Mientkiewicz appeared to be overpowered and struck out swinging. Dustan Mohr struck out swinging at a pitch low and away. A.J. Pierzynski flied to center. No runs, no hits.

ANGELS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Garret Anderson lined Eric Milton's second pitch, a high fastball, deep into the seats in right center. Troy Glaus struck out swinging. Spiezio walked. Shawn Wooten, on a 3-2 pitch, singled sharply to right, Spiezio taking third. It was a great at-bat. Wooten kept fouling off pitches and finally saw one he liked. Bengie Molina popped to first. Benji Gil struck out. One run, two hits, two left.

THIRD INNING

TWINS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Luis Rivas hit a hard shot into the hole at short. Eckstein made a nice backhand stop, but Rivas beat the throw. Jones hit a slow grounder to Eckstein, who forced Rivas. Guzman hit a slow bouncer to Glaus, but Gil dropped his throw, giving the Twins runners at first and second. Yes, Adam Kennedy bats left-handed and Milton is a left-hander, but Kennedy probably would have handled that throw. Koskie struck out swinging again. LeCroy flied to left. No runs, one hit, one error, two left.

ANGELS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Eckstein fouled to right. Erstad singled to short left, a 'tweener just over the outstretched glove of Koskie. Salmon lined to left. Anderson flied to left, Jones making the catch in front of the 330 sign. No runs, one hit, one left.

FOURTH INNING

TWINS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Hunter fouled to first. While Mientkiewicz was batting, Fox flashed a graphic telling us that he once caught 17 fish during a televised fishing show. Wow! Anyway, he then grounded to short. Mohr lined a single to right-center. Washburn appeared to have Mohr picked off first and threw to Spiezio. Mohr took off for second, but slid under Eckstein's tag. Pierzynski flied to center. No runs, one hit, one left.

ANGELS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Glaus singled to right. Spiezio flied to right. Wooten popped to short. Molina struck out. No runs, one hit, one left.

FIFTH INNING

TWINS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Rivas grounded to short. Jones grounded to first. That made him hitless in 12 at-bats in the series. Guzman struck out swinging on a nasty slow curve. No runs, no hits.

ANGELS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Gil flied to center. Eckstein fouled to first. Erstad lined a shot to left that appeared to hit the line, but left-field umpire Ed Montague called it foul, believing it was just a bit outside. Erstad then popped to short. No runs, no hits.

SIXTH INNING

TWINS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Koskie struck out looking. LeCroy struck out swinging. Hunter lined a single to left. Mientkiewicz grounded to second. No runs, one hit, one left.

ANGELS: Angels 1, Twins 0--Salmon flied to left. Anderson lined a double off the wall in right. Glaus walked. Spiezio flied to right, but Anderson did not bother to tag up and couldn't advance. Wooten flied to shallow center. No runs, one hit, two left.

SEVENTH INNING

TWINS: Angels 1, Twins 1--Mohr hit a high chopper between Glaus and Eckstein for a single. Pierzynski went after the first pitch and hit a routine fly to left. Rivas flied to right. Finally ... Jones returned to the hit column, driving a double over Anderson's head off the wall in left, Mohr scoring. Guzman popped to second. One run, two hits, one left.

ANGELS: Angels 1, Twins 1--LaTroy Hawkins pitching. Molina walked. Chone Figgins ran for Molina. Gil sacrificed. With the count 0-2, Eckstein hit a liner to the right of Rivas. If it's caught, it would be a double play. If it's missed, it would be a run for the Angels. Rivas only got his glove on it, and Figgins took third. Johan Santana replaced Hawkins. With the infield playing in, Erstad hit a grounder to second. Rivas threw home and got the sliding Figgins on a very close play, Eckstein taking third. Mike Jackson replaced Santana. Salmon walked on a full count, loading the bases. J.C. Romero replaced Jackson. Anderson flied deep to right. No runs, one hit, three left.

EIGHTH INNING

TWINS: Angels 1, Twins 1--Francisco Rodriguez pitching. Jose Molina catching. Koskie struck out looking. David Ortiz, batting for LeCroy, struck out looking at a curveball on the outside corner. Hunter flied to left. No runs, no hits.

ANGELS: Angels 2, Twins 1--Glaus drove a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center. Spiezio struck out swinging. Wooten struck out looking. Molina grounded to second. One run, one hit.

NINTH INNING

TWINS: Angels 2, Twins 1--Troy Percival pitching. Alex Ochoa to right. Mientkiewicz lined to right, Ochoa making a diving catch. Mohr flied to right. Pierzynski flied to shallow left, Anderson making a sliding catch. No runs, no hits.
