Acid Seeps Into Sewer but Causes No Harm

October 17, 2002|From Times Staff Reports

Sulfuric acid trickled into the city's sewer system Wednesday morning after a leak of the substance temporarily shut down an air-conditioning unit at Ventura County Medical Center.

Sulfuric acid is normally used to treat water in air-conditioners, but 15 to 20 gallons of the liquid got into another area of the cooling unit.

The acid wound up in Ventura's sewer system but did no damage, the Ventura County Fire Department said.
