Former Water Official Accused of Shakedown

October 19, 2002|From Times Wire Reports

A Lathrop lobbyist and former water board official was indicted in a public corruption probe on charges that he shook down developers seeking approval from his agency.

Monte McFall, 56, was indicted Thursday in U.S. District Court in Sacramento on three counts of attempted extortion, two counts of witness tampering and nine counts of mail fraud.

A yearlong FBI investigation led to the allegations that McFall used his post in Reclamation District 17 to shake down developers on the east side of the San Joaquin River levee.

McFall allegedly received more than $30,000 from two brothers and tried to extort $60,000 from a developer who once worked as an FBI agent.
