Update--In his last two starts, Washburn beat the New York Yankees in the game that ended the division series and gave up one run over seven innings to the Minnesota Twins in Game 3 of the league championship series. In his last eight starts, including the playoffs, he is 4-1 with a 2.26 ERA. He never has faced the Giants, but he is 5-0 against National League teams. Schmidt can throw 98 mph, but the Angels love to face fastball pitchers. In two playoff starts, Schmidt has struck out 13 in 13 innings and held opponents to a .159 batting average. He never has faced the Angels. He had a 2.37 ERA at Pacific Bell Park this season -- and a 5.02 ERA on the road.
